The Alexander Technique
Sep 06, 2022What is the Alexander Technique?
. . . a question many Alexander Teachers aim to answer with clarity, while capturing the depth and wholeness of the work and teachings.
Ask 10 different Alexander Technique Teachers what the Technique is and you will likely get 10 different answers.
And, amazingly, all are generally “correct”, which speaks to the work, as it is not a fixed place to be but a way of being. By following the principles of the Technique many perspectives give us another lens to view and integrate the work.
A few ideas to consider . . .
The Alexander Technique is about discovering the space between stimulus and response and having the means and tools to make decisions and choices within that space.
It is about releasing excess tension. Where are we holding on tighter, longer and more than necessary?
It is about movement - efficiency of movement and re-education of movement. How can we live in our bodies with more freedom and ease?
It is about our habits of thinking and patterns of behavior.
Where is our thinking? How is it affecting the way we show up in the world? How does it affect our energy and the way we move?
What are the things we do without realizing we are even doing them?
A lot of questions, that, if we allow them, create a space of discovery with an opportunity for change.
